The Super Eagles of Nigeria has secured a vital 1-0 victory over Rwanda in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, keeping Nigeria's qualification aspirations alive.
Tolu Arokodare’s decisive strike in the 51st minute lifted Nigeria to third place in Group C with 10 points from seven matches, trailing leaders South Africa (16 points) and Benin Republic (11 points).
The match tested Nigeria’s resolve, with the team dominating possession but facing a stubborn Rwandan defense.
An early goal by Victor Osimhen in the eighth minute was disallowed for offside, and the Galatasaray forward was substituted in the 33rd minute due to an injury, replaced by Cyril Dessers of Panathinaikos.
Despite further chances, including a notable save by Rwanda’s Fiacre Ntwari to deny Alex Iwobi, the score remained level at halftime.
Arokodare, introduced as a substitute, capitalized on a rebound shortly after the break, heading home to secure the win. Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali’s late save proved crucial in maintaining the lead against Rwanda’s late push.
The victory marks Nigeria’s second in the qualification campaign, propelling them past Rwanda and offering a lifeline after a shaky start.
The team now faces a critical encounter against South Africa in Bloemfontein on Tuesday, where a win could significantly boost their chances of advancing.
Rwanda, despite a resilient performance, remains in contention but saw their position slip.
